DO YOU NEED WAX, PVA, OR AN ADDITIVE?
here is some more info on each option:

Gelcoat won't cure properly on its own because it needs help to overcome air exposure. You'll need either wax or a clear additive to ensure it hardens. Wax creates a surface barrier for open mold repairs (followed by sanding/polishing), while an additive chemically cures the gelcoat for closed molds or thicker layers. Choose the best approach based on your project's mold type and desired finish.

Topcoat Additive - Easiest Option

Add Clear additive topcoat directly to your gelcoat (50/50 ratio) This gives you a smooth (nearly walk-away) finish and eliminates the need for PVA or wax! (You can choose to add Topcoat to your gelcoat order, and we will do this process for you!)

Surfacing Agent - Classic Approach

Surfacing agent at a 4% add is a classic method for creating a barrier to the air to allow the gelcoat to cure.

PVA - 2nd APPROACH

Apply PVA after your gelcoat cures and is tack free to help with mold release.

What's the Difference?

  • PVA: This is water-soluble and is to create a barrier to the air for the gelcoat to cure.
  • Surfacing Agent: This wax-like additive can be mixed with gelcoat, when it migrates to the surface it will create a barrier to the air allowing for the gel coat to cure.
  • Clear Additive Topcoat: The ULITIMUTE SHORTCUT! This additive creates a flawless finish without the need for additional steps. (This additive creates a nearly walkaway finish, with minimal finish sanding and buffing).

How to Choose

  • Project Size: Consider how big your project is and the shape of your mold to decide how best to use wax.
  • Follow the Guide: Always check the gelcoat manufacturer's recommendations for the specifics of catalyst types and wax methods.

Remember: Catalyst (MEKP) is always needed. Don't skip these steps!
