Acetone is the industry-standard solvent for cleaning and degreasing in the composites field. Its powerful solvency allows it to effectively dissolve and remove uncured epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resins from tools, brushes, and work surfaces. Acetone also excels at removing grease, wax, and other contaminants from substrates, ensuring optimal surface preparation before bonding or repair procedures. Its quick evaporation rate minimizes residue, leaving surfaces clean and ready for subsequent processes.
Please be Advised: While acetone is an effective solvent, we strongly recommend not using it to thin resin or gel coat as it can lead to added pinholes or premature yellowing. Acetone is highly flammable and will evaporate rapidly, and should be handled much like gasoline. When not in use, keep containers tightly sealed at all times.
We recommend using Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) when thinning resin and gel coats.
