  • Description: Lilly Ram's gel coat technology significantly reduces styrene emissions, shrinkage, and costly overspray. In addition, Ram gelcoats yield improved weather ability and osmotic blister resistance when compared to similar conventional gelcoats. Topcoats are formulated to ensure an air-cure product, eliminating the need for PVA/wax, and resulting in a nearly walk-away, gloss finish with both exceptional scratch resistance and UV protection.

DO YOU NEED WAX OR AN ADDITIVE?
here is some more info on wax or additive

Gelcoat won't cure properly on its own because it needs help to overcome air exposure. You'll need either wax or a catalyst (MEKP) to ensure it hardens. Wax creates a surface barrier for open mold repairs (followed by sanding/polishing), while MEKP chemically cures the gelcoat for closed molds or thicker layers. Choose the best approach based on your project's mold type and desired finish.

Easiest Option: Topcoat additive A.K.A. TOPCOAT

  • Smooth, nearly "walk-away" finish
  • No need for PVA or wax

Classic Approach: Surfacing Agent (Wax)

  • Add to gelcoat at 4% ratio
  • Forms a barrier, allowing gelcoat to cure

What's the Difference?

Surfacing Agent: Traditional wax additive that creates a barrier for gelcoat curing. Requires additional sanding and finishing steps.

Topcoat Additive: Advanced additive for a nearly flawless finish. Minimizes sanding and buffing for faster results.

How to Choose

  • Project Size: Consider how big your project is and the shape of your mold to decide how best to use wax.
  • Follow the Guide: Always check the gelcoat manufacturer's recommendations for the specifics of catalyst types and wax methods.

Remember: Catalyst is always needed. Don't skip these steps!
