Customer Highlight - Ryan Thompson
I’m a total DIY guy; I thrive off building and restoring anything I can get my hands on. From welding to carpentry to electrical, thanks to you guys at Sherfab, I can lay fiberglass and shoot gel coat.
I bought my first boat during covid when I was bored out of my mind and had no idea what to look for. I wasn’t too pleased with the flat bottom style boats; after searching for weeks for a project, I stumbled across this 1983 Eliminator Monaco that needed a full restoration.
After a new floor and stringers, I still wasn’t happy with it, so I started researching how to shoot gel coat, and the guys on the SocalJetBoats Facebook group recommended I buy all my products from Sherfab.
I shot 5 gallons of Lillyram mixed with Prestec Hi-gloss additive and an additional 2 gallons of straight Prestec to give it an insanely glossy look. Like most DIY guys, I was on a budget, so I used a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP gun and 3Ms disposable PPS system to make cleaning the gun between batches as easy as possible.
It only needed a light block sanding with 1000, 3000, and 5000 to get it flat, but it was a breeze and saved me so much money doing it myself. I plan on starting a YouTube channel, and all my future restorations and projects will be on there cause YouTube is pretty limited when it comes to shooting gel coat and boat restorations.
Next Project: The plan is to flip this boat and pick up an Eliminator Dayton and do a full restoration on it!
